Zelensky Accuses Russia of Continuing Attacks During ‘Easter Ceasefire’

In Kyiv, Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia on Sunday of deceiving with a false ceasefire during Easter. Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a temporary truce, attacks by Moscow continued overnight, according to Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian leader reported instances of Russian shelling and assaults along the front line despite the declared ceasefire. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for Russia to fully comply with the ceasefire terms and extended Ukraine’s offer to prolong the truce for 30 days, starting at midnight on Sunday. He noted that the ceasefire proposal is still open, and decisions will be based on the situation on the ground.

Zelenskyy pointed out that some areas experienced a decrease in hostilities after Putin’s ceasefire declaration, attributing the war’s continuation to Russia. Meanwhile, Russia-backed officials in Kherson reported ongoing attacks by Ukrainian forces. Following the ceasefire announcement, Putin attended an Easter service at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour alongside Patriarch Kirill, a prominent supporter of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Putin’s ceasefire, effective from Saturday evening to midnight following Easter Sunday, lacked specifics on monitoring or coverage of airstrikes and ground battles. The announcement followed remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are reaching a critical point, emphasizing his commitment to ending the prolonged conflict.
