The construction of what is claimed to be the biggest green hydrogen plant in the world has reached 80% completion, according to Air Products, a US-based industrial gases company. The NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia has made significant progress across various sites, including the hydrogen facility, wind garden, solar farm, and transmission grid. Key equipment such as wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolyzers, cold box, and pipe racks have been received and installed as part of this milestone.

Air Products has outlined that the 4 GW solar and wind power generation sites are on track to be finished by mid-2026, with the first ammonia products expected to be available by 2027. The project, led by NEOM Green Hydrogen Company, a joint venture comprising ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, aims to establish the largest green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility powered by renewable energy. This facility is anticipated to generate up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen daily in the form of green ammonia, providing a cost-effective solution for the transportation and industrial sectors worldwide.

The project is reported to be grounded in proven technologies, with a focus on integrating these technologies on a large scale and utilizing ammonia for transporting hydrogen to global markets. It is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately five million metric tonnes per year. Spanning over 300 square kilometers in the NEOM region of Saudi Arabia, the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project is aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative. The plant is set to operate entirely on around 4 GW of renewable electricity generated from dedicated wind and solar plants on-site.
