On May 9th, 2025, a woman from the UK received £30,000 in damages after her colleagues likened her to Darth Vader following an online personality test taken on her behalf. The comparison to the iconic Star Wars villain was deemed by a UK court to be insulting and distressing, leading to the woman feeling unpopular at work and eventually resigning from her job. The court ruled that equating her personality with Darth Vader was a workplace detriment that warranted compensation.
The incident occurred in August 2021 when Lorna Rooke and her coworkers at a blood donation center participated in a Star Wars-themed Myers-Briggs personality questionnaire. Although Lorna was absent when the test was taken, a colleague completed it on her behalf and informed her of the Darth Vader association upon her return. This revelation significantly impacted Lorna, causing her to believe she was unpopular at work and prompting her resignation the following month.
Despite Darth Vader being described in the Myers-Briggs questionnaire as a “very focused individual” capable of uniting teams, the judge concluded that the comparison was offensive. Employment judge Kathryn Ramsden stated that aligning someone’s personality with Darth Vader, a notorious Star Wars villain, is disrespectful. Lorna Rooke was compensated £28,989.61 for the detriment caused by the association, while her claims of unfair dismissal, disability discrimination, and failure to provide reasonable adjustments were dismissed.
