Widespread Use Of Illicit Streaming Devices In Taiwan Poses Potential National Cybersecurity Threat, New Research Finds

In Taipei, Taiwan, a new study has uncovered that illegal streaming devices (ISDs) are not only fueling widespread piracy but also present serious cybersecurity risks for consumers and national infrastructure. The research, unveiled at an enforcement seminar in Taipei, was conducted by Professor Paul A. Watters of Cyberstronomy Pty Ltd and highlighted the vulnerabilities of ISDs to malware infections and remote hijacking. These security flaws could potentially lead to identity theft, ransomware attacks, and espionage, with the devices even capable of being used in large-scale cyberattacks on Taiwan’s critical systems. The study flagged concerning findings such as a high percentage of ISD-associated apps containing malware, multiple security vulnerabilities in ISDs, and the exploitation of user devices through “superuser” privileges by attackers. Matt Cheetham, General Manager of the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP), warned that every ISD in Taiwan could be used as a tool in a widespread cyber assault if not regulated properly. The study recommended a comprehensive approach to tackle the issue, including stricter regulations on ISD sales, enhanced monitoring of malicious ISD infrastructure, and the implementation of DNS/site blocking to prevent access to malware-hosting domains.
