Who got passing — and failing — grades on this fashion sustainability scorecard

According to Stand.earth, no fashion brand has excelled in reducing its reliance on fossil fuels for energy and materials. H&M Group received a top grade of B+ in the watchdog’s latest Fossil-Free Fashion Scorecard, indicating that progress in sustainability is achievable even for fast fashion companies. However, seven brands received failing grades, including Shein for its soaring indirect emissions due to heavy polyester use.

The report assessed companies based on climate commitments, renewable energy transition, advocacy, materials, circularity, and clean shipping. H&M was recognized for supporting suppliers in emission reduction efforts and for its transparency in climate commitments. Sportswear and outdoor brands led in climate commitments, with Patagonia and Puma scoring a C+. Luxury brands like Kering and mass market brands like Eileen Fisher also showed improvement in sustainability efforts.

Stand emphasized the need for the fashion industry to phase out fossil fuels and transition to a low-carbon economy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The organization urged brands to support a just transition and engage with communities in their supply chains to promote sustainability.

Eileen Fisher and Mammut received A+ grades in specific sub-categories. On the other hand, Boohoo and Aritzia ranked lowest in the assessment, with failing grades across various criteria. Stand highlighted the lack of emission reduction targets for some companies like Abercrombie & Fitch, Aritzia, and Columbia Clothing.

Stand’s analysis identified key areas for progress, including transparent climate commitments, support for renewable energy transition, advocacy for climate action, sustainable material sourcing, and greener shipping practices. The organization provided recommendations for fashion companies to accelerate decarbonization efforts, such as setting net zero goals, financing decarbonization initiatives, and promoting climate adaptation.

The report underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among fashion brands to reduce emissions, transition to renewable energy, and adopt sustainable practices throughout the supply chain.
