Tequila is currently a highly sought-after spirit. The Distilled Spirits Council, an industry group, reports that Tequila is the fastest-growing spirit in the US, with category revenue increasing by $192 million to reach $6.7 billion from 2023 to 2024. This growth is evident when ordering popular Tequila-based cocktails like margaritas or palomas at local bars, where a wide variety of Tequila brands showcasing unique terroir and flavors can be found.

Although many tequila bottles may be recognizable big brands, others may be lesser known. Max Reis, beverage director at Looka restaurant and bar in Los Angeles, specializing in Mexican spirits, explains that all Tequilas, irrespective of the brand, begin with blue weber agave as the main ingredient. The agave, aged for around six to seven years, is harvested, cooked to convert starches into sugars, milled to extract juice, fermented, distilled twice, and then bottled as blanco tequila.

However, some major Tequila producers may use additives during the distillation process, with the Tequila Regulatory Council permitting undisclosed additives up to one percent of the total liquid weight. These additives, like oak extract, caramel color, glycerin, among others, influence the final flavor and texture of the Tequila. On the contrary, additive-free Tequilas rely solely on the agave flavor. In a taste test of sixteen blanco Tequilas, both with and without additives, three standout Tequilas were selected based on smoothness, balanced flavors of citrus, sweetness, earthiness, smoke, and vegetal notes.

The tasting process involved categorizing the Tequilas into three price groups, ranging from $21.99 to $54.99. Tasters sampled the Tequilas at room temperature in glencairn glasses to fully appreciate the aromas and flavors. The evaluation focused on identifying a well-balanced Tequila with no harshness or excessive sweetness, but with notes of caramel, citrus, and vegetal flavors.

The top three Tequilas chosen were Hornitos Plata Silver Tequila, Teremana Blanco, and Patrón Silver, each offering distinct characteristics and flavors. Hornitos impressed with its neutrality and softness, while Teremana stood out for its structure and flavor complexity. Patrón, though expensive, was appreciated for its velvety texture and dynamic flavor profile.

In addition to the top three, other Tequilas were also tasted, each offering unique flavors and characteristics. The tasting panel aimed to select Tequilas that would appeal to a wide audience, balancing quality, flavor, and affordability.
