We should welcome MAGA remorse: I should know — it saved me

It has become a common sight to witness testimonials from individuals who previously supported Donald Trump but are now considering abandoning the MAGA movement. This regret among former supporters is just starting, and it is crucial to offer a way out for those feeling increasingly uncertain.

This development should not come as a surprise. It is a common trait among people to only care about something when it directly impacts them personally.

One significant issue is Trump’s efforts to deport immigrants in violation of the Constitution without granting them their right to due process. These attempts have faced resistance to some extent.

Elon Musk’s actions with DOGE have caused unnecessary disruptions, resulting in the layoff of thousands of federal workers who expected to be spared. Musk has epitomized inefficiency, debunking the myth that successful businesspeople can effectively manage the U.S. government’s $7 trillion budget. The country is not a profit-driven entity and must not be treated as one, as it is accountable for the well-being of millions of people.

Running a government without proper preparation is not an effective approach, including Trump’s tariffs that could lead to inflation and potentially trigger an economic downturn. This has raised concerns among previously loyal voters in agriculture and small businesses.

As the executive director of the nonprofit organization Leaving MAGA, I often receive inquiries on how to engage with those close to us who support MAGA. It is advisable to avoid a “I told you so” approach, as it only reinforces subservience to Trump.

Our organization, established last year, aims to support individuals leaving MAGA, those harboring doubts about their backing of Trump, and friends and family of current MAGA followers.

The question arises as to why people are attracted to MAGA in the first place, including my own experience. Prior to 2015, I was intrigued by politics but held misconceptions and cynicism. I was drawn to MAGA due to its appeal to disillusioned individuals, particularly those disenchanted both personally and politically.

The central issue is why many disenchanted individuals have gravitated towards MAGA. Understanding the root causes of widespread unhappiness among fellow Americans is crucial, including misinformation, bias against the “other side,” and a flawed perception of capitalism and free markets leading to financial discontent.

It is valid to believe that the capitalist system favors the wealthy, particularly the ultra-rich. Many Trump supporters will eventually realize that the chaos caused by figures like Trump and Musk will adversely affect lower-income and middle-class Americans, as well as small business owners.

Engaging with MAGA supporters requires dialogue, not confrontation. It is essential to acknowledge their beliefs without necessarily agreeing with them. Seeking common ground and understanding their perspectives can facilitate constructive conversations aimed at fostering doubt and ultimately encouraging them to reconsider their support for MAGA.
