The sibling of 27-year-old NYPD officer Chowdhury Nafees, who was assaulted by two individuals in the Bronx on Saturday, informed Fox News Digital that the attackers increased their violence upon learning Nafees was a police officer. This incident has sparked discussions about policies regarding the use of force that could hinder law enforcement from defending themselves.
Wayne Lucas, 23, and Taveon Hargrove, 23, were taken into custody for the assault that left Nafees, who was in uniform heading home from work, severely injured. The suspects allegedly forced the off-duty rookie officer to the ground, stomped on his face, causing multiple fractures, and held a knife to his throat before taking his wallet, iPhone, and gun and fleeing the scene.
Chowdhury Nafees was hospitalized in critical condition for several days after being rushed there by EMS. His family was alerted by Nafees’ partner about the incident, but they only received confirmation after the 45th precinct informed them he was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Nafees’ brother, Chowdhury Navid, recounted finding his brother unconscious and bleeding from his eyes when they arrived at the hospital.
Navid described the severe injuries Nafees sustained, including head trauma and fractures to his orbital bone and cheekbone that will require reconstructive surgery. The family expressed shock and distress over the attack, especially upon realizing that the violence intensified when the assailants discovered Nafees’ profession in law enforcement.
The family and supporters are rallying for justice and calling on the department to enhance protection for officers. They are also concerned about existing use-of-force protocols that may discourage officers from defending themselves in dangerous situations. Despite the challenges, Nafees was discharged from the hospital, and his family is grateful for the progress in his recovery.
Nafees’ brother emphasized his sibling’s dedication to serving the community as a police officer, highlighting his passion for the job over financial gain. The family remains appreciative of the support received and the efforts made to aid Nafees in his recovery.
