US, Chinese officials to meet in London next week for new round of trade talks

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that senior U.S. administration officials will convene with a Chinese delegation in London on Monday for the upcoming round of trade discussions between Washington and Beijing. The meeting follows a positive phone call between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, aimed at resolving issues regarding tariffs and the global supply of rare earth minerals. Representing the U.S. side in the talks will be Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Trump expressed optimism about the meeting’s outcome in a social media post. During the call, Xi agreed to resume exporting rare earth minerals and magnets to the U.S., which had been reduced by China, impacting various American manufacturers. The conversation between Trump and Xi, leaders of the world’s largest economies, lasted around 90 minutes, with Xi reportedly initiating the call and urging the U.S. to reconsider its actions against China. Trump also mentioned his administration’s support for Chinese students studying in the U.S., despite plans to revoke some visas.
