Union Maritime, a shipping company based in the UK, is preparing to receive its new LR2 tanker, the first of fourteen, which will be equipped with a wind-assisted propulsion system developed by BAR Technologies. The tanker, named Brands Hatch, is fitted with three 37.5-meter WindWings, making it the world’s first newbuild tanker to feature this technology. The WindWings, produced by CM Energy Tech in China, are expected to reduce the vessel’s fuel consumption by 1,200 tonnes annually, equivalent to cutting over 3,800 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

The use of WindWings will help Brands Hatch comply with global sustainability standards until 2030, including meeting the 5% Wind Reward Factor under the FuelEU Maritime regulation. This technology will be classified as a zero-GHG energy source, potentially enhancing the tanker’s Energy Efficiency Design Index and aiding compliance with the IMO Greenhouse Gas Fuel Intensity standard.

Union Maritime sees the addition of this LR2 tanker as a significant step towards efficiency and sustainability in its operations. The company aims to combine maritime expertise with innovation to move towards a more sustainable future. The installation of WindWings on newbuild tankers is part of Project AeroPower, a collaboration between Union Maritime, BAR Technologies, and other partners. This initiative aims to introduce wind propulsion systems on a global scale and has involved seeking approvals for commercial adoption from various stakeholders.

In a separate agreement with BAR Technologies, Union Maritime had previously arranged for WindWings to be installed on two LR2 tankers being built in China. These tankers are set to be delivered by late 2025.
