Renowned Chef Michael Lewis is bringing his acclaimed UKIAH Japanese Smokehouse concept to South Florida, with a new location set to open in Downtown Fort Lauderdale in late Spring 2025. The restaurant, known for its unique blend of Japanese flavors and American barbecue techniques, will add to the area’s diverse culinary offerings.
UKIAH Japanese Smokehouse is a collaboration between Chef Michael Lewis, Steven Haigh, Lizzy Maynes, and Michael Sponaugle. With its origins in Asheville, NC, the team is excited to introduce their innovative dining concept to the Las Olas Riverfront neighborhood.
Chef Lewis, with over 30 years of experience in the culinary industry, aims to showcase a different side of Japanese cuisine at UKIAH, focusing on street food influences and incorporating southern BBQ methods. The menu will feature signature dishes like House-Smoked Brisket and Pastrami Short Rib, alongside street food items such as yakitori, gyoza, and ramen.
The restaurant’s bar will offer a selection of cocktails inspired by both local ingredients and traditional Japanese flavors, providing a unique “East meets West” experience. The spacious Fort Lauderdale location will feature indoor and outdoor dining areas, a central bar, and options for semi-private events, with a brunch menu available on Sundays.
In addition to its culinary offerings, UKIAH is committed to giving back to the community through its giving2sipsprogram, which supports local charities. The team behind the restaurant is dedicated to making a positive impact in Fort Lauderdale, where they have called home for over 15 years.
