U.S. travelers say these are the 10 most popular summer destinations around the globe: ‘People are craving relaxation’

Tripadvisor recently published its annual Summer Travel Index, unveiling the top trending international destinations for American tourists. According to the report, U.S. travelers are seeking overseas adventures in both bustling cities and serene beach getaways, with relaxation and rejuvenation being the main motivation for 51% of travelers. Hilary Fischer-Groban, Senior Director of Global Brand, Insights, and Comms at Tripadvisor, highlighted the trend of travelers delving deeper into cultural experiences and exploring off-the-beaten-path locations.

The rankings were based on data collected from an online survey of more than 2,800 consumers across six countries and searches conducted on Tripadvisor between February and April 2025 for travel between June and August 2025. Notably, four out of the top 10 trending destinations for U.S. travelers are situated in the Caribbean.

Cancún, Mexico emerged as the leading global destination for American travelers, offering a blend of natural beauty, hospitality, and accessibility. Known for its pristine beaches and cultural attractions like the underwater art museum, Cancún provides a range of accommodations to suit various budgets and preferences. Additionally, the city’s proximity to Tulum and Playa del Carmen enhances its appeal, especially during whale shark season from May to early September.

Other top international destinations for U.S. travelers include Paris, London, Rome, Cabo San Lucas, Punta Cana, Barcelona, Oranjestad, Venice, and Cap Cana. Paris, renowned for its iconic landmarks and culinary experiences, ranked as the second most popular global destination, offering a gateway to explore Europe and indulge in a variety of cultural delights.
