U.K., France, Canada Threaten Action Against Israel Over Gaza Offensive

Leaders of Britain, France, and Canada have issued a warning to Israel, threatening action if it does not cease its military offensive in Gaza and remove aid restrictions. This puts further pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The intervention follows Israel’s announcement of a new operation and Netanyahu’s statement that Israel would take control of all of Gaza. International experts have raised concerns about an imminent famine.

The joint statement released by the British government deems Israel’s denial of humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilian population as unacceptable and potentially violating International Humanitarian Law. The leaders also oppose the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and are prepared to take additional measures, including targeted sanctions.

Israel has blocked the entry of essential supplies into Gaza since March in an attempt to pressure Hamas to release hostages taken during an attack in October 2023. The leaders express support for Israel’s right to defend against terrorism but criticize the current escalation as disproportionate and unacceptable.

They also back efforts by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and affirm their commitment to recognizing a Palestinian state as part of achieving a two-state solution.
