Karmelo Anthony was able to secure his release following a bond hearing where the judge decided to reduce his bond from $1,000,000 to $250,000. The change came after the family enlisted the services of a new attorney, Mike Howard, from Dallas who specializes in criminal defense.
During the hearing, the defense team emphasized Anthony’s positive attributes, highlighting his past leadership roles as captain of his high school football and track teams. They also mentioned that Anthony, who is the oldest of three siblings, had no prior criminal record before the incident. Testimony from his father revealed that Anthony had been employed at Foot Locker and also worked a second job at an H-E-B supermarket before the tragic event took place.
Prosecutors raised concerns about the bond reduction, pointing out that the family had already raised more than $400,000 through crowdfunding. Anthony’s father clarified that they did not have access to these funds and could not afford the original million-dollar bond. The defense team argued that the money raised was intended for legal expenses, not bail.
Following Anthony’s release, it was reported that threats and swatting incidents were being directed at the family of Austin Metcalf, the victim in the case. Metcalf’s mother’s residence was falsely targeted with a report of a shooting, although she was not present when law enforcement responded.
