“They won’t admit it”: GOP Sen. Kennedy says Abrego Garcia deportation was a “screw-up”

In the era of misinformation, there are still undeniable truths. Senator John Kennedy, a Republican from Louisiana, acknowledged one such truth during an appearance on “Meet the Press” with host Kristen Welker. He admitted that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man from Maryland, was mistakenly deported to El Salvador.

Initially, the Trump administration acknowledged the error that led to Abrego Garcia being sent to the CECOT prison in Central America. However, they have since changed their stance in court proceedings and resisted efforts to bring him back.

Senator Kennedy bluntly stated on Sunday that he believed it was a mistake on the administration’s part. Despite this break from the broader GOP, he did not fully align himself with critics of the administration. He expressed sympathy for the Trump administration and refrained from suggesting that this error might indicate broader issues within the Department of Homeland Security.

Kennedy’s comments diverged from the usual Republican stance, but he did not fully join the opposition. He attributed the administration’s reluctance to admit the mistake to fear of backlash. While acknowledging the error, he downplayed the possibility of a pattern of negligence within the department.
