A Texas deputy was shot on Monday near the Harris County Family Law Center in downtown Houston, and the suspect was also injured, according to authorities.

The Harris County Sheriff, Ed Gonzalez, mentioned that reports of a shooting at the Criminal Justice Complex came in around 12:30 p.m. The wounded deputy, identified as Sheila Jones from Harris County Pct. 1 constable, was airlifted to the Memorial Hermann Medical Center.

Sheila Jones was working as security at the Family Law Center when a violent incident occurred. Deputies pursued the suspect after noticing he was armed, leading to the suspect allegedly opening fire. Following the shooting of Jones, the suspect was shot by other deputies and also hospitalized. The exact number of shots fired was not disclosed, but both Jones and the suspect are expected to recover.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Sheila Jones, an Army veteran whose son is also in the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, has been in law enforcement for three decades, with the last two years spent at the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office. She typically worked at the county attorney’s office.

The Houston Police Department is in charge of the investigation into the shooting that took place on Monday in downtown Houston.
