Tesla has filed trademark requests for the phrases “Robotaxi” and “Cybercab.” The applications include two filings for each term, one for the vehicle itself and another for the services to be provided with these vehicles.
One of the Robotaxi trademarks for the vehicle has been rejected by the USPTO, citing it as “merely descriptive.” The examiner noted that “Robotaxi” is commonly used for similar goods and services, potentially making it generic despite no conflicting trademarks.
Although facing an initial setback, Tesla has three months to respond and provide evidence and arguments to support its trademark application. The USPTO has asked for various materials like fact sheets, manuals, brochures, and advertisements that use the terms in question.
Tesla must also inform the USPTO if competitors are utilizing terms like “robo,” “robot,” or “robotic” for advertising similar goods or services. The company’s trademark application for using “Robotaxi” in transportation services is pending a decision.
Additionally, Tesla’s applications for the term Cybercab have been paused due to other companies pursuing similar “Cyber” trademarks, including one seeking numerous trademarks related to accessories for Tesla’s Cybertruck.
