During the study, one group of young adults took probiotics daily for a month, while another group received a placebo. Participants were required to submit a daily mood report, which revealed that after around two weeks of consistent probiotic intake, negative feelings such as stress and anxiety decreased. The study, which utilized daily mood tracking as a unique approach, detected the mood-enhancing effects of probiotics in participants.

The researchers found a correlation between regular probiotic consumption and improved mood through the analysis of daily mood reports, psychological questionnaires, and emotional processing tasks. Laura Steenberg, a study co-author and assistant professor at Leiden University, remarked on the study’s ability to identify the positive impact of probiotics on mood by monitoring participants’ daily feelings.

The study results indicated that probiotics could alleviate negative emotions like stress, anxiety, and fatigue within two weeks of consistent intake, compared to the placebo group. While previous research mainly focused on the effects of probiotics on depression, stress, and anxiety, limited information exists on their influence on positive emotions. The study suggested that probiotics might reduce negative moods without affecting positive feelings, potentially offering a significant advantage.

Despite the promising findings, the researchers cautioned that probiotics should not replace antidepressants or psychiatric medications. They recommended thorough testing to determine individual needs and advised consulting a healthcare provider before incorporating probiotics into one’s diet, especially for individuals with underlying health conditions. Additionally, incorporating foods rich in polyphenols, such as berries, apples, spinach, and kale, can promote a diverse microbiome and support the growth of beneficial bacteria. Live probiotic foods like coconut milk kefir, pickles, and yogurt can also contribute to a healthy gut.
