Automakers seem to have embraced the trend of larger screens in car interiors, and Stellantis proudly presents the new Citroën C5 Aircross with the biggest central display ever seen in any of its 14 brands. The infotainment system boasts an impressive 13-inch screen that takes center stage on the dashboard.
Alongside the sizable central screen, the cabin also features a 10-inch digital instrument cluster. Citroën introduces a larger-than-ever color head-up display that can be adjusted in height. Despite the emphasis on screens, physical buttons are still present below the main display. The center console houses the drive mode selector and a compact gear lever, ensuring that not everything is dominated by the large screen.
In its second generation, the C5 Aircross is built on the STLA Medium platform, hinting at shared elements with the upcoming Jeep Compass. The vehicle maintains Citroën’s distinctive boxy design and unique styling. Standing out as the first model from the brand to come with 20-inch wheels as standard, it should be noted that the luxury spin-off DS Automobiles already offers vehicles with larger 21-inch alloys.
Positioned as Citroën’s flagship model, the C5 Aircross boasts advanced features such as matrix LED headlights and a sophisticated suspension system with progressive hydraulic cushions, providing a smooth driving experience akin to a “magic carpet.” The suspension system incorporates two progressive shock absorbers at the front axle to enhance comfort on uneven roads.
With a larger footprint than its predecessor, the C5 Aircross now measures 183.1 inches (4652 millimeters) in length, representing a 5.9-inch (150 millimeters) increase over the previous generation. The wheelbase has also been extended by 2.36 inches (60 millimeters) to 109.6 inches (2,784 mm), resulting in more rear legroom.
Offering a variety of powertrain options, the new C5 Aircross bids farewell to diesel engines. The base model is equipped with a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 136 horsepower, complemented by a 12-hp mild-hybrid system powered by a small 0.9-kWh battery. A plug-in hybrid variant combines a 1.6-liter turbo engine with an electric motor for a total output of 195 hp and an electric range of up to 53 miles (86 kilometers) on the WLTP combined cycle.
For electric vehicle enthusiasts, the C5 Aircross is available in two versions with varying power outputs and battery capacities, offering impressive ranges and fast-charging capabilities. While Citroën does not plan to bring the brand to the United States, Renault intends to reintroduce its Alpine performance sub-brand to North America in the near future, while the C5 Aircross will be launched in Europe later this year.
