Scenic views were abundant both on and off the ship. A Mexican navy tall ship carrying 277 crew members made a ceremonial entrance into lower Manhattan on Tuesday, providing New Yorkers with a preview of what to anticipate at next year’s Sail4th event celebrating America’s 250th birthday. Onboard, naval cadets stood on the Cuauhtémoc’s 147-foot mast, while others adorned in Mexican cultural attire awaited nearby. As the ship sailed through New York Harbor, three long horns sounded as a gesture of goodwill between Mexico and the US amidst ongoing tariff issues.

The Cuauhtémoc, constructed in Spain in 1982 for cadet training, is set to be one of 30 Class A International Tall Ships participating in a parade through the Harbor on July 4, 2026. This grand procession will feature numerous smaller vessels, a military flyover, and a fireworks display. Captain Andrew McGovern, a Sail4th board member, expressed excitement about the upcoming event, emphasizing the focus on cultural exchanges and the lasting impact it will have.

The vessel’s current voyage, which includes stops in various countries, serves as a training opportunity for the Mexican cadets. The ship’s latest class of 175 cadets is the largest to date, showcasing the growing interest in naval training. The cadets, who took on more responsibilities due to an increased class size, displayed their skills as they maneuvered around the ship’s masts upon arrival in New York City.

Upon docking, the cadets, dressed in traditional Mexican attire, showcased their heritage as a form of celebration. Mexican Ambassador to the US, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, participated in a brief ceremony on board the Cuauhtémoc as Mexican Americans greeted the ship with flags and cheers. This event is part of a series of international goodwill visits that take place throughout the year, culminating in next year’s Sail4th event in New York City during Fleet Week and the World Cup.
