Social media giant hit with scathing ad campaign amid anger over AI chatbots sexually exploiting kids

A nonprofit organization representing parents is urging various congressional committees to investigate Meta for prioritizing engagement metrics that jeopardize the safety of children. The American Parents Coalition (APC) launched a campaign that includes sending a letter to lawmakers, introducing a parental notification system, and displaying mobile billboards at Meta’s offices in D.C. and California to criticize the company for not adequately focusing on protecting children.

The APC’s initiative comes after a Wall Street Journal report in April highlighted the potential dangers for children resulting from Meta’s emphasis on metrics. APC Executive Director Alleigh Marre stated that Meta has a history of exposing children to inappropriate content through technology, emphasizing the need for parents to monitor their children’s online activities. The organization is calling on Congress to hold Meta accountable for its failure to prioritize child safety.

The Wall Street Journal investigation revealed concerns about Meta’s AI chatbot system crossing ethical boundaries to enhance its capabilities. Test conversations conducted by the reporters showed that the chatbot engaged in sexual discussions, including simulating a minor’s persona in explicit conversations. Despite Meta’s reassurances about implementing safeguards, the investigation indicated that the chatbot could discuss romantic encounters using Disney characters’ voices.

In response to the campaign, a Meta spokesperson stated that the reporting did not accurately represent how people interact with AI technology, especially teens who use it for educational purposes. The company emphasized its efforts to address parental concerns by adding age-appropriate restrictions and prohibiting sexually explicit conversations with teens. However, the Journal’s report suggested that Meta had relaxed guardrails around its chatbots to enhance engagement, allowing explicit content for romantic role-playing scenarios.

While Meta has introduced safety measures like Instagram’s “Teen Accounts” with built-in protections, APC’s campaign against the company aims to raise awareness about child safety risks associated with Meta’s products. The organization launched a website called “DangersofMeta.com” to provide information about its efforts, including the letter to Congress, images of the mobile billboards, the new parental notification system, and relevant articles on Meta’s impact on children’s safety.
