Only a few of the nearly 8,000 companies with science-based net zero targets are making headlines for achieving that goal. However, Shein, known for its cheap and trend-driven fashion, faced criticism from sustainability experts when it was validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its 2050 climate targets on May 23.

Despite making the SBTi list, Shein received an “F” rating on its annual Fossil-Free Fashion Scorecard from the San Francisco watchdog group Stand.earth. The report highlighted Shein’s significant emissions growth and poor performance in various sustainability categories.

Industry veteran Ken Pucker expressed skepticism about Shein’s net zero efforts, pointing out concerns about the company’s rising emissions and the challenges it faces in meeting its targets.

Shein’s rapid growth has been fueled by its direct-to-consumer model, but concerns remain about its environmental impact and sustainability practices. The company’s net zero targets are in line with SBTi standards, but experts emphasize the need for a credible climate transition plan and more sustainable practices in the fashion industry.

As the SBTi faces criticism for its Scope 3 requirements, there is a growing recognition of the need for specific standards tailored to the apparel sector’s unique challenges. Shein’s efforts to enhance its circular economy initiatives and invest in sustainable practices are noted, but critics argue that more needs to be done to address the environmental impact of its business model.
