In response to a series of recent train derailments, U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is urging CSX to enhance rail safety measures and prevent derailments that pose risks to public safety. Senator Ossoff recently initiated an investigation with CSX Transportation’s CEO, Joseph Hinrichs, calling on the company to take action following two recent train car derailments in Georgia. The incidents occurred in Fayette County on March 25, with six train cars derailing, and in Smyrna on May 9, where 17 train cars derailed in a residential area.
Expressing deep concern over these derailments, Senator Ossoff stressed the need for CSX to implement specific solutions promptly to avoid future incidents that could endanger constituents. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding communities from potential harm caused by such operational failures. Additionally, Senator Ossoff has been dedicated to enhancing transportation safety to support Georgia’s businesses and families.
In his efforts to address safety issues at rail crossings, Senator Ossoff, along with Senator Rev. Warnock, secured federal resources through initiatives like the Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program. Through this program, they allocated funding to projects aimed at improving safety at rail crossings in various counties, including Chatham, DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Jenkins. Their work has also involved collaborating with the Federal Railroad Administration to investigate concerns related to train delays impacting residents’ daily lives.
Senator Jon Ossoff, who represents Georgia in the U.S. Senate, has been actively engaged in advocating for transportation safety and infrastructure improvements since taking office in 2021.
