Jane Jordan, who was considering returning as clerk-treasurer for Burns Harbor, has decided to withdraw her candidacy because the Town Council refused to consider her request for increased compensation. The position became vacant on May 14 following the resignation of Nicole Migliorini. Don Craft, the chairman of the Porter County Democratic Party, aims to appoint a new clerk-treasurer before the council’s upcoming meeting on May 28. Craft is working with the Town Council to make the appointment and has disclosed that one of the candidates is Burns Harbor Councilman Nick Loving, a Democrat, though Loving has not responded to requests for comment. Due to Burns Harbor being comprised of one voting precinct, Craft has the authority to make the appointment without a caucus. Migliorini resigned citing a toxic work environment after the council rejected her request to hire a second assistant clerk. Jane Jordan, a Democrat who had served as Burns Harbor clerk-treasurer for 20 years and was re-elected in 2023, resigned suddenly in May 2024 along with her husband due to issues with the Burns Harbor Volunteer Fire Department Corporation. Jordan, who had been drawing a state pension since leaving the position, had requested an increase in salary due to her certifications, but the council did not consider her request. Following this, Jordan informed Craft of her decision to withdraw her candidacy. Council President Jennifer McHargue stated at a meeting that the position would be filled according to the law, but declined to comment on whether Jordan was one of the candidates.
