Recycling Concerns in Fayette County
May 23, 2025

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my concerns about the unsatisfactory condition of recycling practices in Fayette County. Over the past few years, the transfer station has transitioned from accepting all recyclables except glass to restricting it to only cardboard/corrugated boxes and metal. However, in the recent month, even cardboard and corrugated materials are no longer accepted. This leaves county residents, excluding those in PTC, with no viable option for recycling most materials. Notably, there is no facility in the county that accepts plastic bottles for recycling, unlike our neighboring counties that provide at least one recycling drop-off point for their residents.

During a recent recycling attempt, I had to make three separate stops – Publix for plastic grocery bags, the boy scout trailer behind the Crosstown Kroger for aluminum cans, and the SCT glass recycling dumpster on Grady Ave in Fayetteville for glass – yet, I still had to bring back my cardboard/corrugated, paper, and plastic bottles home.

I intend to discuss these issues with my county commissioner, but I also appeal to the media to shed light on the substandard state of recycling in our county.

Sincerely,
Keith B.
Fayetteville
