Port Esbjerg in Denmark has expanded its capacity by deepening the fairway, which now allows access for larger vessels and increased cargo volumes. This development opens up new opportunities in the energy and defense sectors. The project involved moving 3,702,000 cubic meters of seabed material to deepen the water from 9.3 to 12.8 meters. The dredged material was reused to expand the port, with environmental impact assessments conducted in collaboration with authorities and the public. Port Esbjerg completed the project on time and under budget.

The deeper fairway enables the port to accommodate larger vessels, strengthening its position as a key hub for offshore wind shipments in Europe. It also allows for the handling of larger RoRo and military vessels, enhancing its strategic importance to NATO. Port Esbjerg’s CEO, Dennis Jul Pedersen, sees the fairway deepening as a significant milestone that expands the port’s capacity and potential for the future. The infrastructure development plan at Port Esbjerg, designated as a strategic node in the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network, includes extending the rail connection and establishing new areas for heavy logistics, particularly focusing on offshore wind.

Søren Gade, Chairman of the Board of Port Esbjerg, emphasized the strategic importance of the project in positioning the port for the future of energy and security. The EU’s Connecting Europe Facility provided funding of DKK 211 million for this project.
