In Ljubljana, Slovenia, the police are investigating the disappearance of a bronze statue depicting U.S. first lady Melania Trump that was sawed off and taken from her hometown. The life-size sculpture was revealed in 2020 near Sevnica, Melania’s birthplace, during President Donald Trump’s first term in office. It replaced a wooden statue that was burned earlier that year. The police were notified of the theft on Tuesday, and they are actively trying to locate the culprits. Reports suggest that the bronze replica was sawed off at the ankles and stolen. Franja Kranjc, who works at a bakery in Sevnica, where cakes with Melania Trump’s name are sold in support of the first lady, expressed that the stolen statue will not be missed, as he believes no one, including the first lady herself, took pride in it. The original wooden statue, shaped from a linden tree trunk, was set on fire in July 2020 and displayed Melania in a pale blue dress worn at Trump’s inauguration, unlike the bronze replica that bears no apparent likeness to the first lady.
