Panama Canal Introduces Electronic Ship Registry System
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has launched the Electronic Vessel Registry (REN) system as part of its efforts to modernize operations. The system aims to integrate the management systems of the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine (DGMM) and the Public Registry of Ship Ownership of Panama (DGRPN). By streamlining vessel registration services, the new registry is expected to enhance efficiency in maritime operations.
Director General of the DGRPN, Marta Aparicio, emphasized the importance of eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy and striving for excellence to stay competitive in the global shipping industry. The integration of DGMM and DGRPN through a web-based platform is anticipated to simplify processes for both national and international stakeholders.
The ACP highlighted the ongoing development of the registry to meet the evolving needs of the shipping sector. Ramón Franco, Director General of the Merchant Marine at the ACP, expressed optimism about the potential of digital tools to improve response times and tracking processes for the 9,000 vessels registered under the Panamanian flag.
Despite recent tensions with the United States over alleged Chinese influence, Panama remains committed to modernizing and decarbonizing the canal. In a joint declaration on security matters, Panama and the US reaffirmed respect for Panama’s sovereignty over the waterway. The ACP also introduced a priority passage program to support low-emission shipping, including the NetZero Slot for environmentally friendly vessels. Collaboration with companies like Stillstrom aims to reduce emissions from ships in and around the canal.
