Former US Representative Jamaal Bowman endorsed democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani for mayor on Wednesday, but critics criticized Mamdani for accepting the support of the controversial ex-“Squad” member. Bowman, a two-term Democrat for the Bronx and Westchester County, left office after pleading guilty to falsely triggering a fire alarm in the Capitol. Mamdani welcomed Bowman’s endorsement, seeing him as an ally on affordability issues for the working class and underprivileged. Mamdani took a swipe at former Governor Andrew Cuomo, the primary frontrunner, with polls placing the democratic socialist in second place.
Bowman, who represented the 16th Congressional district before being replaced, was aligned with the progressive “Squad” members like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib. He labeled Mamdani as the candidate for working people and criticized Cuomo as a corporate Democrat. Despite Bowman losing to a moderate Democrat in a primary, Mamdani valued his endorsement and considered it a significant moment in the campaign.
Some pro-Israel activists accused Mamdani of antisemitism due to Bowman’s support, which they claim will deter voters from backing him. Mamdani, now a Queens assemblyman, hailed Bowman’s endorsement as historic and praised him for his dedication to the Bronx and New York City.
Bowman faced controversy during his time in the House, including being censured by the Republican-led House and pleading guilty to a misdemeanor for triggering a false fire alarm. He was also criticized for his remarks on Israel and conspiracy theories related to 9/11. Despite this, Bowman remains politically active, creating a Super PAC to support left-leaning candidates.
A recent poll showed Cuomo leading the Democratic primary race with Mamdani trailing behind. Mamdani garnered more support from younger voters, while Cuomo was favored by older voters, as well as black and Latino voters.
