A white car was caught on a neighbor’s home security video system circling the block multiple times on the night when four University of Idaho students were fatally stabbed in an off-campus house. The car repeatedly approached the house before speeding away 13 minutes later, as shown in previously unseen footage obtained by “Dateline.” The video sheds new light on the events surrounding the murders, with prosecutors linking suspect Bryan Kohberger to the crime through various pieces of evidence.
The investigation into Kohberger’s alleged involvement in the murders includes a white Hyundai Elantra, DNA evidence, cellphone data, and his online activities before and after the killings. Law enforcement obtained cellphone tower data connecting Kohberger’s phone to the area near the crime scene, among other evidence.
Kohberger, a graduate student in criminology at Washington State University at the time of the murders, was arrested in late December 2022 and faces charges of first-degree murder and burglary. Despite maintaining his innocence, Kohberger could potentially face the death penalty if convicted.
Details about a motive for the attack have not been disclosed by Latah County prosecutors, and a gag order is in place limiting public statements about the case. Kohberger’s defense team has raised the possibility of an “alternate suspect” and highlighted discrepancies in the evidence presented by the prosecution.
As the case proceeds to trial, scheduled to begin on August 11, various aspects of the investigation, including DNA evidence, cellphone records, and witness testimonies, will be contested in court. The defense aims to challenge the prosecution’s narrative and provide an alternative explanation for the events leading to the tragic deaths of the four students.
