Most Americans expect higher prices as a result of Trump’s tariffs, new poll finds

Trust in President Trump’s ability to strengthen the U.S. economy is dwindling among Americans, as a recent poll reveals concerns over a potential recession and the impact of tariffs on prices. Approximately half of U.S. adults believe that Trump’s trade policies will significantly raise prices, with many expressing worry about the economy slipping into a recession soon. While doubts about tariffs are growing, it doesn’t necessarily mean a complete rejection of Trump or his trade strategy. However, this caution could pose challenges for a president who pledged to swiftly address inflation issues.

After three months into his second term, Trump’s economic and tariff handling is emerging as a potential vulnerability. Around 40% of Americans approve of his economic and trade negotiation methods, consistent with a previous poll in March. Some citizens, like Matthew Wood from Kentucky, are apprehensive about the tariffs’ outcomes, prompting them to reconsider their political affiliations. The poll also shows a slight increase in opposition to tariffs, particularly among younger adults who previously had no strong stance on the issue.

While the U.S. economy currently shows stability with moderate inflation and a low unemployment rate, concerns about disruptions in daily life are mounting due to Trump’s tariff actions. Many Americans are skeptical of Trump’s tariff tactics, with about 60% believing he has gone too far. The financial markets are reacting to the unpredictable tariff situation, leading to uncertainties about future costs and investments. Despite concerns about rising prices and financial stress, the economy has demonstrated resilience so far.

As Trump explores negotiations with China to mitigate the impacts of tariffs, the majority of Americans remain highly concerned about the cost of groceries and major purchases in the coming months. Retirement savings and financial aid for education are also areas of anxiety for some individuals. Democrats, in particular, have become more pessimistic about the nation’s economic outlook under Trump’s policies, while Republicans have shown increased optimism compared to the previous administration.

The AP-NORC poll surveyed 1,260 adults from April 17-21 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
