Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan adds former Bush solicitor general to defense team

Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan, who was arrested last week for hiding an undocumented immigrant in her jury room, has enlisted former U.S. solicitor general Paul Clemente to represent her, as reported by Law.com. Clemente, a renowned appellate lawyer, has a significant legal background, having served as solicitor general from 2005 to 2009 and argued numerous cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He now joins Dugan’s defense team amidst her legal troubles.

Dugan faces charges of obstructing an official proceeding and concealing an individual to prevent arrest, stemming from an incident where she allegedly helped an undocumented immigrant evade federal agents after a court appearance. Clemente’s involvement in Dugan’s defense is noteworthy due to his conservative legal stances, which have included challenging gun control laws and opposing same-sex marriage.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has temporarily relieved Dugan of her duties, and she appeared in federal court in Milwaukee on Friday. Clemente, who co-founded an appellate law firm in Washington, D.C., has a distinguished legal career, having clerked for prominent judges and argued significant cases in the high court. He is expected to join a legal team led by Steve Biskupic, a former U.S. attorney, in defending Dugan against the charges.
