Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has been invited to attend the G7 leaders’ summit in Alberta next month, as confirmed by Canadian officials. The invitation was extended by Prime Minister Mark Carney during a phone call on May 15. Sheinbaum has not confirmed her attendance yet, but the summit is scheduled to take place in Kananaskis, Alberta from June 15 to June 17. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also been invited, but Ottawa has not confirmed the guest list. US President Donald Trump is expected to participate, and discussions will likely include global issues such as American tariffs. There is speculation that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa may also be invited, with South Africa hosting the G20 summit later this year. South Korea has expressed interest in becoming a permanent member of the G7. The North American Leaders’ Summit, originally planned for last year with Mexico and the US, was delayed due to ongoing elections in both countries. The United States is expected to review the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) this fall, earlier than the initially scheduled 2026 review. Prime Minister Carney has stated that he wants to address other economic priorities before the CUSMA review. The Business Council of Canada has welcomed Sheinbaum’s invitation and urged for a fast-track CUSMA review to restore economic certainty and stability.
