Mercedes Will No Longer Create Vehicles With Distinct Designs Based On The Powertrain They Choose

Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce a fresh design approach focused on “respect” to revamp its range and create a cohesive style for both its electric and traditional vehicles. This move aims to distinguish upcoming Mercedes models from competitors and enhance their appeal as luxury items.

Gorden Wagener, the design head at Mercedes, conveyed to British Autocar during the Shanghai Motor Show that the prevailing issue with current design trends is the lack of uniqueness. Wagener emphasized that Mercedes aims to steer clear of blending in with a mass of similarities.

This differentiation is crucial in the premium automotive segments where vehicles are more than just modes of transport, Wagener noted. He emphasized that in the realm of luxury, a bond is formed with the car, evoking emotions and a desire for more than just a utilitarian object.

Wagener stressed that Mercedes should not be viewed as a mere necessity like a refrigerator, as luxury represents a desire rather than a need. He emphasized that Mercedes does not produce mere functional gadgets on wheels.

In the future, Mercedes will place a stronger focus on incorporating respect into the design of its vehicles, as that is the expectation of customers when purchasing a Mercedes. Wagener highlighted the need for respect, especially for individuals who have achieved success and made something of themselves.

To achieve this goal, Mercedes will integrate certain features highlighted by the striking Vision V concept, which Wagener described as both “incredibly attractive” and “nearly ready for production.” He emphasized the commanding presence and respect evoked by the vehicle’s front design, underlining the brand’s essence of love and respect.

While paying tribute to the bold design of vehicles, Wagener stressed that it does not necessarily entail larger grilles but rather emphasizes the shape and uniqueness of the front end. This design philosophy will be applied uniformly to both SUVs and electric vehicles going forward, eliminating the differentiation in design based on powertrains.

As Wagener stated, Mercedes is transitioning away from employing two distinct design languages and will concentrate on ensuring the brand stands out through a distinctive front end. The focus has shifted from electric cars’ unique design to emphasizing the Mercedes brand across the board.

According to Wagener, whether it’s an electric vehicle or one with a combustion engine, it remains a Mercedes at its core.
