A man is facing criticism for deceiving the Twins Association by falsely claiming his wife had given birth to quintuplets at Karanda Hospital.
The Twins Association of Zimbabwe (TAZ) was tricked by an elaborate scheme this week. Leaders of the association, Farai Lawyer Katonha and Tendai Mayor Katonha, traveled 210km to Karanda Mission Hospital based on the fabricated claims they had received.
Man Falsely Reports Wife Delivering Quintuplets
An employee of the Harare municipality who identified himself as Valetta Nyamupfukudza reached out to TAZ over the weekend with an incredible tale. He stated that his 33-year-old wife, Magret Rachel Kachave, had just given birth to quintuplets (three boys and two girls) at the remote hospital.
The man also claimed that this was their second multiple birth, as they already had twins in Grade 4.
“When we learned about this rare multiple birth, we immediately activated support networks,” the Katonha twins explained. “Several companies and individuals had pledged assistance through our platforms.”
Hospital Authorities Disprove the Claims
Upon their arrival at Karanda Hospital, medical staff promptly refuted the story. Dr. Paul Thistle, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, confirmed that no such birth had taken place at their facility.
“Our maternity unit has no records of quintuplets – this would have been an unprecedented occurrence for our hospital,” Dr. Thistle noted. “The most notable multiple birth we handled was three sets of triplets last year. We appreciate TAZ’s concern, but this seems to be a complete fabrication.”
Leaders of the Association Express Disappointment
The deceived officials expressed disappointment about the wasted trip and resources.
“This was not just about the distance – we had engaged our entire support network,” they stated. “The caller provided detailed false information, including the children’s names and school grades, to make his story seem believable.”
TAZ stressed that they always verify claims before providing assistance.
“Maybe the remote location led him to believe we wouldn’t verify,” the leaders speculated. “However, we have rigorous verification processes precisely for this reason.”
Mystery Surrounds the Motives
Authorities are still puzzled about the intentions of the scammer.
“Perhaps he desperately wanted twins or needed help,” the Katonhas mused. “But deceit is never the answer. We assist many genuine cases, and this false report diverted resources from families in genuine need.”
