Maddow sums up Musk’s time in Washington with one metaphor

Following Elon Musk’s departure from the federal government, Rachel Maddow revealed the analogy she believes encapsulates the billionaire’s tenure in Washington. During her show on Monday, Maddow highlighted a specific agency that was targeted by Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE. In March, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) took legal action against DOGE after experiencing a hostile takeover of its Washington headquarters. With the assistance of law enforcement, DOGE seized control of USIP’s building and terminated the agency’s staff.
A federal judge recently deemed the takeover unlawful and instructed the Trump administration to return the headquarters to USIP. Upon their return, employees found the office in disarray, suffering from water damage, infested with rats and cockroaches, as per a statement from the agency’s CEO.
While acknowledging that many have used Musk’s recent setbacks, notably seen during his farewell in the Oval Office last week, as a symbol of his time in the White House, Maddow argued that USIP offered a more direct representation of the billionaire’s legacy.
“A building needlessly seized, needlessly shut down, left to be overrun by pests — only for its rightful owners to eventually return and have to rebuild everything. For no valid reason,” Maddow remarked. “I believe that’s a more fitting analogy.”
