The separation between Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks in February has deeply affected the 26-year-old NBA star emotionally, even leading to a broken cell phone. During a recent interview with ESPN, Doncic shared his feelings about the unexpected trade that moved him to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a future first-round pick.
Despite the Lakers coming out as the clear winners in the trade, Doncic experienced a tumultuous departure that left him feeling heartbroken and led to a damaged phone. In the interview, Doncic expressed his initial shock and sadness upon learning the news, admitting that he was in bed when he found out and reacted by throwing his phone, although it still functions.
Having spent the first 6.5 years of his career in Dallas, Doncic wished to finish his time there, calling it an easy decision. While thriving with the Lakers, Doncic revealed that he has not communicated with Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison since the trade, highlighting the strained relationship between them.
Harrison recently defended the trade, stating that he has no regrets and emphasizing his responsibility to make decisions that benefit the Mavericks in the present and future, even if they are unpopular. Doncic, however, found Harrison’s comments following the trade disheartening, expressing a desire to move on from the situation and focus on his new team and the playoffs.
As the NBA playoffs progress, the Lakers prepare to face the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round matchup on Saturday night.
