Italy’s Meloni is positioning herself as bridge between EU and Trump – but will it work?

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently made history by becoming the first European leader to visit the United States following President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on trading partners, which included a 20% tax on imports from the European Union. Although these tariffs are currently on hold, the looming threat of their implementation created a significant backdrop for Meloni’s visit in mid-April 2025.

Known for her controversial and strategic approach, Meloni has navigated a fine line between upholding European Union unity and aligning with far-right ideologies since assuming office as Italy’s prime minister in 2022. She distinguished herself as the sole European leader to attend Trump’s inauguration in January 2025 and has established connections with figures like Elon Musk.

Meloni’s diplomatic efforts reflect Italy’s complex identity as a regional powerhouse with global aspirations. Despite being a founding member of the European Union, Italy has often found itself on the periphery of EU influence, overshadowed by the Franco-German alliance. Nevertheless, Italy has demonstrated its ability to leverage its position as a bridge between conflicting factions within the EU.

During her visit to Washington, Meloni sought to forge a stronger ideological alliance with Trump based on shared opposition to “woke” politics, diversity initiatives, and relaxed immigration policies. She proposed increased Italian investment in the U.S. as a gesture to address transatlantic trade tensions while reaffirming her and the EU’s support for Ukraine, contrasting with Trump’s skepticism on backing Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Meloni’s diplomatic strategy aims to maintain relations with both Brussels and Washington without alienating either side. However, this balancing act poses risks as she may be forced to choose between appeasing Washington’s demands on trade and defense spending or adhering to EU norms, potentially isolating Italy from its European allies and diminishing its global influence.
