Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday that Iran needs to cease uranium enrichment and long-range missile development and should allow American inspectors access to its facilities. His remarks come as nuclear talks have been postponed, highlighting the significant divides remaining between the countries to resolve the ongoing conflict over Iran’s nuclear program, with President Donald Trump warning of potential military action against Iran in the absence of an agreement.
Rubio emphasized the need for Iran to discontinue sponsoring terrorists, aiding the Houthis in Yemen, manufacturing unnecessary long-range missiles, and engaging in uranium enrichment. Iran has consistently stated its refusal to abandon its missile program or uranium enrichment, which can be utilized for nuclear weaponry in addition to fueling nuclear power plants.
A senior Iranian official disclosed that the fourth round of talks scheduled to take place in Rome has been delayed and a new date will be determined based on the U.S. approach. Rubio suggested that Iran should import enriched uranium rather than engaging in enrichment, expressing concerns about the potential weaponization of enriched uranium.
While Iran asserts its right to uranium enrichment under the terms of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it denies any intention to develop nuclear weapons. Rubio also emphasized the necessity for Iran to accept American participation in inspection activities, ensuring access to all facilities, including military sites.
