Illegal border crossings remained near historic lows in April after President Trump’s crackdown

Preliminary data from The Post reveals that despite a slight increase over previous months, illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border in April remained close to historic lows. Border Patrol statistics show that federal agents encountered fewer than 10,000 migrants crossing the southern border illegally, marking a significant 93% decrease compared to the same period last year when over 128,000 people crossed illegally.

The statistics indicate that President Trump’s efforts to crack down on the border, a major campaign promise, have led to a substantial reduction in the number of migrants entering the US illegally. In February, there were approximately 8,300 illegal crossings, followed by barely 7,100 in March – the lowest in at least 25 years.

Homeland Security sources noted that the monthly migrant encounter numbers are now lower than the daily illegal crossings seen during the Biden administration. The highest single day of illegal migrant encounters in April was reported to be fewer than 450 border crossers.

Manny Bayon, president of the National Border Patrol Council chapter in the San Diego sector, expressed that he has never witnessed such low numbers in his over 25 years of Border Patrol service.

Following Trump’s declaration of a border emergency and the deployment of thousands of troops to the region, the “catch and release” policy utilized by the Biden administration, which allowed millions of illegal migrants to be released into the US, was discontinued.

While the border situation remains calm, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been actively carrying out Trump’s mass deportation initiative. Within Trump’s first 100 days in office, ICE arrested over 66,000 illegal immigrants and deported more than 65,000 individuals. Acting ICE director Todd Lyons emphasized the administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws and safeguarding communities.
