The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) strongly criticized a sanctuary city in Maryland for releasing an illegal immigrant charged with murder. According to a report by Bill Melugin of Fox News, ICE Baltimore accused Prince George’s County of ignoring their request for detention and allowing a Guatemalan illegal alien, who had been deported twice before, and is now accused of murder, to be released into the community. The suspect, Rene Pop-Chub, was arrested by ICE in Hyattsville, MD, after being released by local authorities without notification. ICE stated that the release of the suspect endangered the community and emphasized the importance of honoring immigration detainer requests to ensure public safety. Pop-Chub had been deported in 2017 and 2023 but managed to reenter the U.S. illegally. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the U.S. Marshals Service custody.
