Toyota announced that it sold a total of 10,159,336 vehicles last year, which includes those under the Lexus brand. When factoring in deliveries from subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino, the total number of vehicles sold rises to 10,821,480.
Despite a 3.7 percent drop in deliveries compared to the previous year, Toyota retained its position at the top, surpassing the VW Group for the fifth consecutive year and solidifying its dominance in the automotive industry.
Toyota has revealed an estimate of approximately 150 million vehicles currently in use. The company shared this information as part of a strategy to increase revenue by enhancing customer support for parts and accessories.
The Japanese automaker aims to grow revenue by boosting sales of used vehicles and promoting subscriptions to digitally connected services. These services include Drive Connect for $15 per month, Integrated Streaming for music playback at the same price, and Wi-Fi Connect through AT&T for $25 per month.
Toyota is also prioritizing insurance and financing services to bolster its financial position. Chief Financial Officer Yoichi Miyazaki suggests that these services could generate more profit than new car sales by fiscal year 2026 in Japan, which began on April 1 and ends on March 31, 2026.
Regarding the global total of vehicles on the road, research firm Hedges & Company estimates there are about 1.64 billion vehicles in use worldwide. Assuming this figure is reasonably accurate, approximately 9.15 percent of all vehicles in operation are Toyotas.
Toyota’s latest data projects global vehicle production to hit 300 million by September 2023, marking 88 years since the company’s first car, the Model G1 pickup truck, was produced in August 1935. Toyota achieved the milestone of producing over one million vehicles in a year in 1968 and exceeded 10 million cars assembled in 2012.
Up to September 2023, Japan produced 180.52 million cars, while overseas production totaled 119.6 million. The Corolla remains Toyota’s top-selling model, with cumulative annual production reaching 53.4 million units by the end of September 2023.
