Hegseth states that the US will support Indo-Pacific allies against China’s “imminent” threat

Singapore (AP) – United States Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, has reassured allies in the Indo-Pacific that they will not be left alone to face the increasing military and economic pressure from China. However, he emphasized that these allies must contribute more to their own defense efforts.

Hegseth stated that Washington will strengthen its overseas defenses to counter the rapid military advancements made by Beijing, particularly in its aggressive stance towards Taiwan. China has been conducting exercises to simulate a blockade of Taiwan, a territory it claims as its own and one that the United States has vowed to protect.

During a security conference in Singapore, Hegseth expressed concerns about China’s military preparations, stating that China is actively training for a potential invasion of Taiwan. He also criticized China for its ambitions in Latin America, urging countries in the region to increase defense spending.

Hegseth’s remarks highlighted the need for American allies to enhance their own defense capabilities and stressed the importance of a collective approach to security in the region. He emphasized that relying on both the United States for military support and China for economic assistance could pose risks for Indo-Pacific nations.

While acknowledging the strategic importance of the United States in the region, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles emphasized the need for countries to work together. He also cautioned against the disruptive effects of high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on regional trade.

China’s absence at the security forum was noted, with Hegseth emphasizing the United States’ willingness to collaborate with any nation in the region. He emphasized a more inclusive approach to partnerships, welcoming traditional and non-traditional allies to work together on regional security issues.
