HDF Energy and VIMC Partner to Boost Hydrogen Adoption in Vietnam’s Maritime Industry
May 28, 2025, by Aida Cučuk

In a move to advance the utilization of green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies within Vietnam’s maritime sector, French hydrogen firm HDF Energy and Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) have inked a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU). The collaboration will involve joint efforts to incorporate hydrogen technologies into ships, ports, and logistics operations through collaborative research and pilot initiatives. HDF is set to design retrofit and onshore hydrogen solutions, while VIMC will offer operational backing and data.

The primary objective of this partnership is to secure international climate funding and establish a scalable model for sustainable maritime energy, aligning with Vietnam’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. HDF emphasized that the agreement underscores their mutual dedication to promoting clean, dependable, and scalable maritime energy solutions.

This venture is part of HDF’s strategic expansion in Asia. In a similar vein, HDF’s subsidiary PT HDF Energy Indonesia recently signed an MoU with the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation, state-owned electric utility PT PLN (Persero), and ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero) to explore the decarbonization of Indonesia’s maritime sector through locally produced green hydrogen. Moreover, in the Philippines, HDF inked an MoU with the Department of Transportation to leverage green hydrogen for powering the next generation of hydrogen-propelled vessels. In Vietnam, the company teamed up with ACST, an entity linked with the Ministry of Construction, to advance green hydrogen solutions, such as retrofitting diesel ferries with HDF’s hydrogen fuel cells.
