Harvard’s president issued an apology on Tuesday following the release of a report by two task forces which revealed that a majority of Jewish and Muslim students had experienced discrimination and hate on campus. Alan Garber expressed regret for the instances where the university failed to meet the community’s high expectations. The reports, totaling 500 pages, included findings, surveys, and recommendations. Garber set up the task forces to address anti-Semitism, anti-Israeli bias, as well as anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian bias. The investigations were initiated after protests erupted on campus, leading to the resignation of the former president, Claudine Gay. The apology and findings were disclosed shortly after the Trump administration threatened to cut federal aid to Harvard due to alleged anti-Semitism. Garber stated that Harvard would not comply with the administration’s demands and emphasized the university’s commitment to independence and constitutional rights. He also pledged to enhance efforts to promote mutual respect at Harvard. Recommendations include clarifying values to combat hatred, improving disciplinary processes, and providing educational training on anti-Semitism and Islamophobia. Garber expressed a desire for Harvard to be a welcoming place for students of all backgrounds, where they can freely express themselves and pursue their aspirations.
