Mohammed Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, was reportedly killed by Israeli airstrikes this week. Sinwar took over as the head of Hamas in Gaza after his brother, Yahya Sinwar, was killed by Israeli forces in October 2024. Reports indicate that Sinwar’s body, along with 10 aides, was discovered in a tunnel in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip. Additionally, Mohammed Shabana, commander of the Rafah Brigade, was also reportedly killed in the strikes. While the death had not been officially confirmed at the time of writing, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that evidence suggested Sinwar’s demise. Newsweek reached out to Israel’s Defense Ministry for comment.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted strikes on a tunnel hideout beneath a hospital in Gaza, aiming to target Sinwar. The strikes, including attacks on other hospitals, led to casualties. The IDF announced operations to capture areas in the Gaza Strip, with heavy bombardment resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated that Mohammed Sinwar was likely killed, while the IDF expressed its commitment to fulfilling objectives against Hamas. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the dire situation for Palestinians in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans for an expanded offensive against Hamas following approval from the security cabinet, potentially leading to a full takeover of the Gaza Strip.
