Halliburton assists Rhino in oil exploration off Namibia’s coast

On May 16, 2025, Halliburton, a U.S.-based oilfield services company, has supported Rhino Resources in exploring Block 2914 under the petroleum exploration license (PEL) 85 in Namibia’s offshore basins. The collaboration between the two companies resulted in the successful completion of two exploration wells, showcasing the effectiveness of integrated services and local infrastructure. Halliburton’s Vice President for Sub-Saharan Africa, Antoine Berel, emphasized the importance of technology, collaboration, and a shared vision in achieving such drilling milestones.

The drilling success was made possible by Halliburton’s operational bases in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, and Lüderitz, which facilitated the first entirely in-country completed wells. The establishment of the Rhino-Halliburton Technology Centre at the University of Namibia in October 2024 further demonstrates the long-term commitment to advancing geoscience education and research in Namibia.

Rhino Resources’ CEO, Travis Smithard, expressed optimism about the discoveries on Block 2914, highlighting the potential for Namibia’s oil and gas industry growth. The recent oil find on Block 2914, carried out with Noble’s Noble Venturer drillship, marks a significant step in Rhino’s exploration endeavors. Rhino Resources operates PEL85 with a 42.5% interest, in partnership with Azule Energy (42.5%), NAMCOR (10%), and Korres Investments (5%).

Moving forward, Rhino plans to conduct laboratory studies on fluid samples collected during a recent production test to further analyze the oil discovery.
