Spring has just begun, and Ford has already announced a significant number of recalls in the United States for 2025. Since January 1st up to April 18th, the automaker has issued a total of 40 recalls, including one for brakes on 123,611 F-150s, Expeditions, and Lincoln Navigators that was reported recently. On average, Ford is recalling a vehicle every 2.7 days. However, compared to last year, the overall number of recalled vehicles has decreased significantly, with 1,235,256 Fords being recalled this year, nearly one million fewer than the same period in 2024.
A review of the recalls listed on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website shows that almost half of them impact fewer than 1,000 vehicles each. Further analysis reveals that five recalls are for less than 100 vehicles, with the lowest being two 2022 Mavericks recalled on February 28 due to a software issue that was previously addressed in a recall.
Another aspect of Ford’s recall situation is that around half of the recalls are related to an audit focused on improving vehicle software, which the company announced on March 20. According to Ford, they are conducting an audit to ensure that software updates from previous recalls were successful, with the majority of repairs being effective. Despite this audit resulting in 21 recalls, Ford still leads all other automakers in both the total number of recalls and the number of vehicles affected. Volkswagen has issued 12 recalls this year, while General Motors has issued 9. Honda and Stellantis follow with 8 recalls each.
In terms of affected vehicles, Ford is the only automaker with over 1 million recalls currently. Tesla follows with 661,810 recalls, Volkswagen with 346,401, Toyota with 317,359, and Honda with 316,489 vehicles.
