After a gunman shot multiple people at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, flowers were left near the scene. The university initially planned to resume classes on Monday following the tragic incident that left two dead and six injured. However, after receiving feedback from students who expressed discomfort with returning to campus so soon after the shooting, the school changed its decision.
University president Richard McCullough acknowledged the impact of the tragedy and assured students of support. Some students, like junior Madelynn Duggar, who experienced the shooting’s proximity firsthand, expressed concerns about focusing on studies in such circumstances. In response to student petitions, FSU decided to offer excused absences and alternative accommodations for those who did not feel safe returning to campus.
In an email to students, the university announced that classes would still resume on Monday but that online options and other choices would be available for those who preferred not to attend in person. FSU also provided explanations through a video statement, though it was later removed. The gunman carried out the shooting near the Oglesby union on the university campus.
