Florida lawmakers propose end to fluoridated water

Florida lawmakers have passed a bill that could lead to a ban on adding fluoride to public water supplies in the state. If Governor Ron DeSantis signs the bill into law, Floridians may no longer have access to fluoridated water. The measure, known as the “Florida Farm Bill,” would prevent local governments from adding fluoride and other water quality additives to water supplies. Those in favor of the bill argue that fluoride does not improve water quality and that banning it would help local units save money. However, opponents of the measure believe that it would disproportionately impact working and low-income households. If signed into law, Florida would become the second state, after Utah, to ban fluoride in public water supplies. The EPA and the Department of Health and Human Services have also announced a review of the possible health risks associated with fluoride in drinking water. The CDC has highlighted the benefits of adding fluoride to public water supplies in improving oral health.
